Enrico Zio, Scientific Director of Datrix, awarded ISSS 2024 Educator of the Year

Professor Enrico Zio, internationally recognized as an expert, leader, and mentor in the fields of safety, risk assessment, and maintenance engineering of complex systems, has been awarded ISSS Educator of the Year 2024 (International System Safety Society)!

The Educator of the Year award is presented annually for outstanding contributions to education in the field of systems safety and for the advancement of knowledge in this area.

Enrico Zio is a full professor at the Centre for Research on Risk and Crises (CRC) of Ecole de Mines, ParisTech and at the Politecnico di Milano. He is a member of the board of the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano and an IEEE and Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer. In 2020, he received the prestigious Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.

A pioneer in his field, Professor Zio has made fundamental contributions to the development of advanced Monte Carlo simulation methods, dynamic risk assessment frameworks, artificial intelligence techniques, and evolutionary optimization methods applied to the risk and resilience assessment of complex engineering systems.

He is also the author of the Paper and article in MIT Technology Review “Artificial intelligence and Industry 5.0: competitiveness, opportunities, and risks“.

Enrico Zio comments on his award as follows:

“I am deeply honored and grateful to the International System Safety Society for this recognition. It is not for me to say whether it is deserved or not, but I can state that education is important in itself, and even more so when it comes to safety.

We live in an extremely innovative world and we demand more and more from our technological systems: it remains fundamental that everything we ask for is provided safely and, let me add, in a ‘just’ way.

Thanks to the International System Safety Society for everything it is doing in this field.”
